Face Dial rejected!
Mar 20th, 2009 by duncan
I’ve just received this followup email from Apple:
“We received your application named Face Dial Pro, which appears to include features that resemble Polariod photographs. Polaroid has previously objected to other applications that include features that resemble Polaroid photographs, and believes that such Polaroid features infringe its rights.”
Apparently having a white border around a photo is copyrightable (Apple has almost exactly the same interface themselves in iPhoto ’09).
Unfortunately this means the recent bug fix I posted about below will not be available until I make some UI changes and resubmit the application – sorry folks!
Gotta love the app store process. They didn’t have a problem before, and they do it themselves – I can understand them rejecting it on first submission, but when you’re trying to fix a bug..
I’d be all for asking them outright if iPhoto ’09 includes “licensed design elements” from Polaroid™, or whether they just stuck the white border around it and hoped Polaroid™ didn’t have a leg to stand on.
Mo – I did exactly that. They conveniently chose to ignore that part of my email, and asked me for proof (from Polaroid) that I was allowed to use the image-style.
